2010 marked the 40th celebration of Earth Day, a holiday that helped spark America’s modern environmental movement when it was founded on April 22, 1970, by then-Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. In honor of that historic day, MNN produced this quick look back at the last four decades of planetary appreciation.

How did you begin doing yoga?
I started taking yoga in 2000 to mix up my fitness routine, build strength and endurance and increase flexibility. I discovered that the benefits of yoga, for me, like many others goes way beyond moving through the physical poses. The practice of meditation has helped in so many aspects of my life from stress management to sleep to focusing better. I knew that someday I wanted to share what I’d come to love with others, so 11 years later I became a teacher. I love teaching, but what I love most is what my students teach me every day.
What was it like serving as the model for MNN’s office exercise article?
The office exercises were hilarious. It’s really a great piece on some ways to get out of your seat during the day and move. We sit so much of the day that our muscles forget how to work, so these exercises are a great way to wake up a little, get your muscles active, and most importantly laugh at yourself. Particularly if it’s captured in film for the world to enjoy. You should see some of the Fark comments.
How do you go green at home?
Going green at home for me, starts with my trash can. Years ago, I stuck a giant label on my trash can that says “Landfill” so that I think about everything I toss in there. I look for ways to reuse repurporse or “return” everything. If I can’t return it to the earth in the form of compost, I try to figure out how I can re-turn it into something useful either for myself or by donating. And I look for ways to be more efficient like scrubbing the tub and shower while I’m in it, or grouping my errands so I don’t have to make as many car trips.
